High Security Locks

The restricted keys you bought years ago are no longer restricted; the locksmith mentioned the patent has run out and blanks are sold openly. Your key control quietly stopped being control.

In plain words

Most break-ins do not involve picking; they involve a boot, a pry bar or a key that should never have been copied. High security hardware answers all three. A deadbolt with a full one-inch throw and a hardened core resists sawing and kicking, a reinforced strike with three-inch screws keeps the jamb whole, and a patented keyway means a copy can only be made through the locksmith who holds your system. The pick, bump and drill resistance of the cylinder is the layer on top. The locksmith's job is to fit those layers to your particular door and your particular worries.

Sound familiar?

After the attempted break-in the police officer pointed at your door and said the strike plate was held by two short screws. Nobody got in, but you have looked at that door differently every evening since.

How the visit goes

  1. 1

Reading the cylinder you have now

The existing cylinder tells the locksmith a great deal. A standard pin tumbler with an open keyway can be picked, bumped and duplicated by anyone with the blank. Worn pins let a key that is not quite right jiggle it open. A cylinder that spins loosely in its housing or shows a scratched face has been attacked or simply worn out. The locksmith identifies the format, whether key-in-knob, rim, mortise or interchangeable core, because that determines which high-security cylinders will drop into your present hardware and which will need a new lock body altogether.

  2. 2

    Upgrading the cylinder in place

Where the existing lock body is sound, the locksmith removes the ordinary cylinder and fits a high-security one of the same format, so your deadbolt or lever stays and only the working heart changes. The new cylinder brings a sidebar released by finger or rotating pins, hardened steel inserts in the path of a drill, and a keyway that accepts only the controlled blank. Keys are cut from code on a machine that handles the side bitting. The tailpiece or cam is matched so the bolt throws fully, then the cylinder is fixed with its set screw and tested with every key.

  3. 3

A key plan that survives staff changes

For a business, the handover includes a key schedule showing every cylinder, every key number and who holds it. When someone leaves, their key comes back and is struck off; if it does not come back, you know exactly which doors it opened and can decide whether one cylinder or several should be repinned. Because the keyway is restricted, a departed employee cannot quietly keep a copy. New hires are issued a numbered key against a signature. The plan lives in a folder or spreadsheet, and the locksmith keeps a matching record so the two can be reconciled whenever you like.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

    Documentation and registration

Setting up the key register, recording signatories and providing a written schedule of cylinders and keys is real work on a business system and is listed rather than hidden.

  2. 2

    Distance and access

A rural property, a high-rise with loading dock rules or a site that must be visited outside trading hours affects travel and scheduling, and the quote says so plainly.

  3. 3

    Cylinder rating and format

A patented residential cylinder, a laboratory-rated commercial cylinder and an interchangeable core sit at different points on the scale, and the format that fits your present hardware decides which lines are available.

High Security Locks: questions

Advice · (289) 813-6380

What about the glass panel next to my front door?

A sidelight within reach of the inside thumb-turn is the weak point of an otherwise strong door, since a broken pane lets a hand reach the turn. Options include moving the deadbolt further from the glass, a lock function that needs a key inside as well, or a laminated pane. Because everyone must still be able to leave easily, the locksmith talks through the trade-offs and helps you pick the arrangement that suits your household.

Should I upgrade the front door only, or every door?

Start with the doors that matter and the ones that are weakest, which are often not the same. Front doors usually carry the sturdiest hardware already; the side door by the driveway, the door from the garage and the basement walkout often carry the lightest locks and get the least attention. The assessment walks the whole perimeter with you so the upgrade goes where entry is most likely, and the remaining doors can join the same key later.

What is bumping, and does this stop it?

Bumping uses a specially cut key that is struck while under light turning pressure, bouncing the pins to the shear line for an instant so an ordinary cylinder opens. It works on many standard pin tumblers. A high security cylinder needs its sidebar released by separately positioned finger or rotating pins at the same moment, and a bump key cannot set those, so the plug stays locked. It is one of the clearest advantages of the upgrade.

What the census means at the door

27%

Newer homes. About 27% of homes in Oakville were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Where most homes are recent, the doors themselves are sound and the work is mostly about keys and control: who holds them, whether contractor keys were retired, and whether one key can open everything. The visit is often more conversation than drilling.

59%

A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 59% of homes in Oakville (2021 Census).

Neighbourhoods of houses beside townhouses and low-rise buildings have a range of door constructions: solid wood, steel, fibreglass and metal-clad. A locksmith who works in such an area is used to fitting hardware to all of them without new holes.
