Locked out
Safely, right now
- Stay somewhere warm and safe while you wait, such as a neighbour's or your car.
- Don't force a window or the door; it only adds a repair.
- Have a photo ID with your address ready if you can.
Key broke in the lock
Safely, right now
- Leave the lock alone: pushing the piece further in makes it harder to get out.
- Keep the piece you still have. It helps cut a new key.
Lock won't turn
Safely, right now
- Don't force the key. A bent or broken key makes it harder.
- Don't spray oil or glue into it, and don't pour hot water on it in the cold.
Lost keys
Safely, right now
- Keys lost together with your address? Assume someone could use them.
- Don't hide a spare key anywhere outside in the meantime, not even under the mat.
Commercial doors in Oakville take a beating: hundreds of openings a day, deliveries, weather, the odd kick. We fit lever sets, closers, push bars and deadlatches built for that traffic, adjust them so the door shuts and latches on its own, and come back to service them before they fail. Nearby, we also work in Glenorchy.

The fix, explained · Oakville
What is the door doing?
EmergencyHome Lockout ServiceYou stepped out to grab the recycling bin and the door swung shut behind you.
The fix
If you rent, a lockout visit works much the same way, with a little extra care around who holds which keys. You show identification and something tying you to the unit, such as a lease or a piece of mail, and the locksmith opens your door.
EmergencyBusiness Lockout ServiceAfter last night's power flicker the card reader beside the clinic door shows nothing.
The fix
Commercial doors carry hardware that most homes never see, and reading it correctly is the first skill of a business lockout. An aluminium storefront door usually has a narrow mortise cylinder driving a hookbolt deadlock or a paddle-operated deadlatch.
EmergencyBroken Key ExtractionThat key had been bending a little for years, and you kept straightening it.
The fix
What you have when the locksmith leaves matters as much as what was removed. The fragment is out and shown to you.
EmergencyBreak-In Damage Lock RepairThey did not get in.
The fix
There are really two jobs inside one call. The first is tonight: make the door close and lock so the household can sleep.

EmergencySeized & Jammed Lock OpeningThe lock works, but only if you lean on the door with your hip while turning the key.
The fix
Many jammed locks are not lock problems at all. Wood doors swell in humid weather and shrink in dry winter air, hinges loosen and let the door drop, and a strike plate that was fine in spring is a few millimetres out by autumn.

EmergencyLost Keys — Same-Visit RekeyYour purse was taken from the back of a chair at a restaurant.
The fix
The visit runs in a steady order. On the phone you describe what was lost, which doors it opened and whether you have a way in.

What the census means at the door
27%
Newer homes. About 27% of homes in Oakville were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
Where most homes are recent, the doors themselves are sound and the work is mostly about keys and control: who holds them, whether contractor keys were retired, and whether one key can open everything. The visit is often more conversation than drilling.
59%
A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 59% of homes in Oakville (2021 Census).
Neighbourhoods of houses beside townhouses and low-rise buildings have a range of door constructions: solid wood, steel, fibreglass and metal-clad. A locksmith who works in such an area is used to fitting hardware to all of them without new holes.

Book a visit to your door in Oakville
Before a locksmith opens any door in Oakville, he asks to see that it is yours: a piece of identification, a lease, an ownership paper, or a neighbour who can vouch. Most people are relieved by the question. The rest of the visit follows the same habit of care: explain each step, leave the frame and finish as we found them, and make sure the keys in your hand are the only ones that work.
Castle Green, Charnwood, Holton Heights, Kent Gardens and Sunningdale
Told what to expect. Before starting we say how long the work usually takes, what noise or mess is involved and what the door will be like afterwards.
Room to decline. If a suggestion does not suit you, decline it. We will do what you asked for, do it well and leave the rest as advice.
A tidy handover. Keys counted into your hand, the area cleaned, the old parts dealt with and a plain summary of the work. Then we are gone.

Which fix fits?
IfThe shop's back door only latches if someone slams it.
ThenAdjust the closer and realign the strike.
Usually the closer is out of adjustment or the strike has drifted; both are set, not replaced.
IfThe fire exit alarm sounds every time staff use that door.
ThenService the exit device and rethink the routine.
Exit alarms are meant to sound; if staff need that door daily, an arrangement that still lets everyone leave freely is found.
IfThe storefront lock is worn and the key barely catches.
ThenReplace the cylinder with a commercial-grade one.
Storefront cylinders take a beating; a heavier grade is built for that traffic.
IfA roommate moved out on bad terms and says the key was left on the counter.
ThenLost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey.
The visit runs in a steady order.
Ask us anything about locks
Can a frozen lock be opened, and how do I stop it freezing again?
Frozen cylinders open well with patience: lock de-icer or gentle warming melts the ice so the plug turns, and the cylinder is then dried and treated with a dry lubricant that sheds moisture. Hot water is avoided because it refreezes and can crack cold metal. To prevent a repeat, keep a storm door closed over the main lock, fit a keyhole cover on exposed side doors, and carry a small de-icer in your coat or car through the freeze-thaw months.
Why do keys break more in winter?
A daytime thaw sends meltwater into the keyway, and overnight it freezes with the plug held solid. The key goes in, meets resistance, and the natural reaction is to turn harder. Brass gives before ice does, especially at a deep cut that has thinned over years. Cold also stiffens old grease in the cylinder. De-icer, gentle warmth and a dry lubricant break the pattern.
The lever on our shop door goes down but the latch does not pull back. Is that a lock problem?
It usually points to the mortise case rather than the cylinder, and it is a common complaint on commercial doors. Inside the case a return spring, a worn hub, or another part of the latch's drive path can have failed, so the lever moves without driving the latch. The locksmith gets the door open, draws the case out of the door edge, replaces the worn part, cleans and greases the contact points and refits everything, then tests lever, key and thumb-turn together.
Should I rekey after a renovation or when a cleaner stops coming?
It is good practice whenever a key has been out of your hands for a while and you are not certain it came back. Contractors, cleaners, sitters and short-term guests all have honest reasons to hold a key, and most return it, but a rekey at the end of the arrangement is what turns 'probably' into certainty. Some households make it a habit at the close of every project.
