Lock Rekeying in Holton Heights

The builder handed over your new home with a stack of identical keys, and you know the framing crew, the painters and the flooring installers all used a construction key during the build. The doors are brand new, but the key that opens them should be yours alone.

In plain words

Rekeying is a change made inside the lock rather than to the lock itself. Many keyed cylinders hold a row of small pins that have to sit at exactly the right heights before the plug will turn, set by the cuts on your key, though some residential cylinders use a side-locking bar instead of pins. A locksmith slides the plug out, removes the pins, and loads a new set matched to a freshly cut key. Reassembled, the lock looks and feels exactly as it did, except that the new key turns it and every key cut before today does not. Your hardware, finish and door stay as they were.

Sound familiar?

Your roommate moved out last weekend. Rent is settled, the room is empty, and the key is still on their ring. You trust them, but the lock on your front door should answer to the people who actually live here.

How the visit goes

  1. 1

Who is entitled to change the locks

Rekeying decides who can enter a home, so the first check is about the person asking. A homeowner shows photo identification and something tying them to the property, such as a tax bill, a closing document or a utility statement. A property manager brings authorization from the owner. A tenant is asked whether the landlord has agreed to the change and will receive a copy of the new key, because tenancy rules here expect both sides to hold one. Where a unit is in a condominium, the locksmith asks whether the building has a rule about suite-door locks. None of this is an obstacle; it is the part of the job that protects the home being worked on.

  2. 2

Proving the old keys are finished

The last operation at every door is the test that matters most. The locksmith turns the new key from outside and inside with the door open, then closed, and confirms the bolt throws fully and draws back cleanly. Then the old key is tried in the same cylinder and must turn nothing. This is repeated at every rekeyed door, because the door that gets skipped is the one an old key still opens. Spares cut from the new pinning are tried in every lock they are meant for. The old keys, now just shaped brass, are collected or handed back to you for the recycling bin.

  3. 3

    Knowing when to rekey again

Rekeying is not a once-in-a-lifetime event; it is a habit tied to changes in who holds keys. The moments to think about it are the same ones that brought you here: a move, a tenant or roommate change, a key lost with anything identifying the address, a contractor who has finished, or a relationship that has ended. Between those events there is nothing to schedule. Because the house is now on a known system with a record, a later rekey is a shorter visit, and any new lock you add along the way can be pinned to the existing key so the household never drifts back to a ring full of mismatched keys.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

    How many cylinders are included

Each cylinder is removed, pinned and tested on its own, so a single deadbolt and a house with six exterior locks plus a shed and a gate are very different visits, and the quote follows the count.

  2. 2

    Upgrades chosen during the visit

Some people take the opportunity to replace a double-cylinder deadbolt with a thumb-turn model, add a reinforced strike or move to a heavier deadbolt. None of it is needed to rekey; each is a separate line.

  3. 3

    Several units in one building

A landlord rekeying a duplex, a triplex or a small apartment building, with each suite on its own key and a common entry shared, has more cylinders and a keying chart to build, and the quote grows accordingly.

Lock Rekeying: questions

Advice · (289) 813-6380

Can the entry door of my condo suite be rekeyed?

Often, but check with your property management first. Condominium corporations have a right to enter a unit on reasonable notice, and without notice in an emergency, and many buildings ask that suite doors stay on a system the corporation can open or that a key be lodged with management. Lobby, garage and locker-room doors belong to the corporation and are theirs to manage. A locksmith will ask about your building's rule and work within it.

My locks are different brands. Is that a problem?

Not a problem, just a detail to plan around. What matters is the keyway, meaning the profile of the slot the key fits, rather than the name on the lock. Different makers sometimes share a profile and sometimes do not. Where two cylinders cannot accept the same key, one is exchanged for a compatible cylinder in the same finish and pinned to match. From the outside the door looks the same and from your pocket it is one key.

My house is older and has a mortise lock. Can that be rekeyed?

Yes. A mortise lock, the kind with a large case set into the edge of the door, uses a threaded cylinder held by a set screw reached from the door's edge. The cylinder unthreads, is pinned like any other and screws back in. Where a very old lock uses a bit key or a lever mechanism instead of a pin cylinder, the locksmith will explain the options, which may include fitting a modern cylinder into the existing case so the door keeps its original hardware.

What the census means at the door

27%

Newer homes. About 27% of homes in Oakville were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

During construction many people hold a key: framers, finishers, painters, the sales office. Where homes are new, rekeying the exterior doors to a fresh key is the tidy way to close that chapter, and it takes a single visit.

59%

A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 59% of homes in Oakville (2021 Census).

In a mixed area, a locksmith's advice bends to the building. For a house, the side door and garage entry get attention. For an apartment, the suite door's closer, strike and viewer do. The principle is the same: look at how the door is actually used.
